Reflection:

In an age of comfort and materialism, it is easy to put aside the obligations of penance.
The Church marks each Friday in Lent as a day of penance.
It is useful time to focus on our won need for conversion and to enter into, in some way, the passion and death of Christ. Friday’s in Lend including Good Friday take on a particular importance for us. Hence there are rules regarding fasting and abstinence. It is very important that children are educated to appreciate the value of fasting and abstinence in their lives… to do without, to deny themselves, for the greater love of God and others. It is my hope that we (parents and schools) will strive to pass on this tradition to young people with enthusiasm and joy. Such an action has a value that transcends all cultures and helps make us more acutely aware of the place of Christ in our everyday lives.

EON Garden
The EON foundation is going to support a garden for the next three years. The school and community need to be committed to the Edible Garden project as a year-round project. The school children will participate in learning about and cultivating the garden on a regular basis. Each garden project should operate under EON’s direction and support for a minimum of 3 years to cover establishment and 3 growing seasons. This is considered to be the minimum period needed to transfer knowledge and ensure the garden is sustainable. Sacred Heart School appreciate the support of the EON Foundation in this initiative.

This Thursday two members from the EON Foundation will come to school and plant seeds of herbs and tomatoes with students.

NAPLAN
Information for parents on the National Assessment Program, literacy and Numeracy will be given to all year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students to be taken home with this newsletter. The testing will occur from May 12-14th.

Principal Review Process
The Catholic Education Commission has endorsed a process of review for Principals. I am one of a number of Principals in Catholic schools to be reviewed this year.

This Principal Review relates only to the Principal’s Duties and Responsibilities (as enunciated in the Principal’s Deed of Agreement) and is not a School Review or Evaluation.

The process will involve the following members of the school community: Selected Staff; the School Board and the Parish Priest.

This review will be conducted by means of written evaluation, followed by interviews with the reviewers which will take place during term two.

The review panel is comprised of four people: the Bishop’s nominee – Fr Matt Digges; the School Community Consultant from the Catholic Education Office in Broome; the Director’s nominee; and the Principal’s nominee, to be named closer to the review date.

Movie Night
This Thursday we will be having a Movie Night to fundraise for Project Compassion. Entry into the movie night is $5 per child with a hotdog, drink and the movie; we will also be selling lollies for $1.00. The evening is expected to conclude around 5.30pm.

Assembly
Tomorrow Mr Greg and the Sec Class will be running the assembly at 2:00pm in the undercover area.

Lunches
Just a reminder that Sacred Heart School still believes it is the responsibility of the parents/carers to provide a healthy meal each day. The school will provide lunch for students who have nothing to eat.

Uniform
The school is awaiting uniform orders within the next week or so. We have noted that students are not coming in correct school uniform, when this occurs a note will be sent home advising parents of this – when parents get this note if you could please sign and send back to school with your child.

Daylight Saving
A reminder that daylight saving finishes on Sunday 29th March. Please turn your clock back one hour.

Secondary Camp
Many thanks to those students who attended the Leadership Camp in Broome last week, the students had a great time on camp interacting with students from the other Peninsular schools as well as checking out employment, training and educational institutes. Thanks in particular to Mr William who worked with the students in Broome for the week, and to Mr Greg for his keen support.

PAL Project
Thanks to all parents and Community members for their fantastic support with this initiative. Last week Maree Gaffney and Lucy from the Kimberley Land Council visited the school with information to parents about the importance of early learning.

Holy Week
As this term grows closer to Holy Week the teachers are preparing the students for the Easter celebration. This year the students are preparing for Easter plays that will be preformed daily on the last week of school.

This year in the 5/6 class we have been working on our Beagle Bay project. Mr Bernie came up with 25 different activities that our entire class has to complete. We have done some great interviews with elders in our community.

Our class has also been doing a lot of power points.

We have our own chart that says all our names and when we finish an activity we had to put a tick beside our name.

We are also working on our “Project Compassion box.” This year Sacred Heart School has raised $147.60 so far.

Our class was winning when we first started this year but this week the 1/2 keep beating us, so we decided to start putting more money in.

We have new maths books that are fun to use and some great new maths equipment.

We even had our own mass it was very exciting and we had a fun time making pancakes on Friday and playing music in the music room.
